When we bought our house, it had a weatherbeaten old garage next to it made of corrugated iron and railway sleepers. It was suitably agricultural for a village setting but was threatening to fall down so in early 2023 we pushed it before it jumped. By the winter it had been totally rebuilt from the foundations upwards and is now a warm, cosy space with a practical craft workshop leading into a tranquil meditation, teaching/ritual space.
The building is made with a wood frame, heavily insulated to save energy and with solar panels on the roof. It is clad in cedar from a local sawmill, heat treated in traaditional Japanese shou shugi ban style to weatherproof it and make it sit well in its setting.
Wide windows look out onto a private elemental garden (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) which seems to flow seamlessly from the space and in the summer opens up many possibilities for indoor/outdoor working.
